August 2017 Newsletter

Greetings to our fellow quilters, sewers, crafters, etc. ! We hope your week is starting off well and that your creative juices are flowing. However, we also realize that we all need a little extra inspiration from time to time, and so that's what we're here to do--to help you brainstorm and spark your creativity!
As you may have seen on our Facebook page, Naomi and Rhoda had the opportunity to go to Quilt Market in St. Louis back in May. They came back with a treasure trove of new ideas! (Hint: this also means they've ordered some new products! Yay!)
In light of this--we thought we'd share one of the ideas that we are currently working on as a result of that trip and that is to expand
our line of Embrace Fabric. Pictured below are the new fabrics that have already come in and there's more on the way! To view our entire selection of embrace fabrics click here. There's a plethora of fun,new prints featuring llamas, dinosaurs, and lots of metallic designs!

Embrace
Embrace

Some of you may be saying: " Hey that's great...but what do I do with all this new fabric?" We are so glad you asked:) Along with making adorable baby blankets (or blankets for yourself because let's be honest this fabric is light, soft, and comfortable) the embrace fabric can be used to make:

A) Scarves-- Embrace makes great scarves because it's so light weight! The scarf pictured below was made with the pattern "Embrace Double Gauze Pom-Pom Infinity Scarf" which we will give you to you for free if you request it with the purchase of the embrace fabric. We also have the Inessa Jane Infinity Scarf Pattern available for purchase.

B) Pillows--With all the cute prints that Embrace fabric has to offer, how could it not make cute accent pillows?! Add some of our pleated ribbon around the edges and you've got the perfect addition for your nursery, bedroom, or living room!

C) Dresses-- Embrace makes fantastically comfortable clothing! Try it for yourself with our Jacqueline Dress Pattern (available online) or with the Party n' Play pattern (available in-store or over the phone).

D) Combine it with other fabrics!-- Make this super cool, self binding blanket using embrace on the front and our NEW Llama Cuddle Fabric on the back! You can get a free pattern for it with the purchase of those fabrics.

July 2017 Newsletter

Happy July! It's officially summer and we are loving it.
Now, in our last newsletter we mentioned that Row by Row was starting up again and promised we'd give you more details in this newsletter. For all of you whose curiosity is peaked...here is Miller's Dry Goods' 2017 Row.

Coloring Fabric

We think Naomi did a wonderful job at capturing this year's theme, Row by Row On the Go, when she designed our row. Kits, pins, and license plates are now available, but as before, there are a few rules, so keep reading to find out what they are.

First, let's give those of you who are new to the Row by Row Experience an overview of how this works:
Each participating shop (shops are located throughout the U.S, Canada, and Europe) creates their own row centered around a common theme (ex: this year's theme is On the Go). From June 21st -Sept. 5th, 2017 you can shop and collect the participating shops' FREE patterns...as well as purchase kits, license plates (MDG's license plate is pictured below) and fun pins. The first person to turn in a quilt (made out of 8 rows from 8 different shops) at each shop will receive a prize of 25 Fat Quarters.

As I mentioned before, there are a few ground rules:

1. Kits and patterns can only be acquired IN-STORE. In other words, you must visit a shop to receive their FREE pattern and purchase their kit.
2. Each shop will gladly give you a free pattern, however, there is a limit of ONE pattern per customer.

For more information on the 2017 Row by Row experience click here.

Travel, shop, have fun...and come visit us during this year's Row by Row Experience!

June 2017 Newsletter

by Rachelle Miller

June 2017 Newsletter

Wow. It's already June! This year is flying by. It feels as though we just entered spring, and yet summer is waiting for us just around the corner. It's is a lovely time of year, here, in our quaint little town of Charm--flowers are in full bloom, the sound of birds chirping flows through the open windows, the neighbors are busy outside gardening and mowing their lawns, and trips to the our local sweet shop for some refreshing ice cream are becoming more frequent. Within our store the sunlight is streaming through our skylights, our air conditioners are hard at work, Christmas fabric is beginning to flow in (although most of it will arrive in July), and Row by Row is just about to start (more on that in our next newsletter).

This month we're featuring something that you and your kids or grand-kids can enjoy while they're out of school for the summer. That "something" is our coloring fabrics along with our fabric markers. Miller's carries several different "coloring" prints including ballerinas, Christmas themed fabric (shown below), construction scenes, dogs, and butterflies. Select your fabric of choice and then use our fabric markers to bring the pattern to life; Let them set for 24 hours and the color won't wash out. It's a great interactive way to get kids involved in your next sewing project. We chose to make a pillowcase with the fabric that we colored here at the store, but it could be used in other projects as well. Channel your inner child, use your imagination, and create something magical.

We'd like to thank all of you that participated in the shop hop; We hope you enjoyed it! However, for those of you who weren't able to attend or don't know what it is, allow us to give you a little bit of an insight into what went on those 2 days.

The Quilting N' Cuisine Mini Shop Hop is hosted by 5 shops located here in Holmes County, with Miller's Dry Goods being one of them. Each shop creates a wall hanging pattern (everyone has the same design, but uses different fabrics). Throughout the day, participants visit each of the shops were they can have their passport stamped and receive a free recipe, as well as free mystery wall hanging instructions. Below is our version of this year's design. Kits, patterns, and accessory kits are sold in store. They are not available online, sorry! However, if you can't make it to the store and would still like to purchase any of these items, please give us a call. We would be happy to take your phone order and ship them out to you while supplies last.

April 2017 Newsletter

Happy Spring Everyone! It's officially here to stay (I hope). For some of you, spring may be the time of year where your sewing and quilting projects get set to the side, due to gardening or other various outdoor projects. Nonetheless, for those of you who lack a green thumb, we're here to tell you that, if nothing else, your fabric stash is the one thing you can still grow this year.

If your wondering what projects to tackle next or which fabric to add to your collection...we have some ideas for you! Rather than gravitating towards the usual cotton fabric that we all love...maybe add some new textures to your stash.

Expand your Minkee collection. Whether you want a solid or a printed pattern our selection of minkee continues to grow & provides you with plenty of options for the perfect baby blanket or stuffed animal. Maybe try using Minkee for our Digger & Dixie Dachshund Pattern or our Darla the Deer Pattern and create these cute & soft dogs or deer as a baby shower gift or birthday present.

Stuffed Dogs

Darla

Expand your Laminated Fabric collection. Our laminated fabric collection has recently expanded with some fun new prints from Moda. Select patterns from collections such as Lulu Lane, Poetry, and Coney Island can be now be found in laminated fabrics. We used our new fabric to make the Bag Lady Tote (a pattern that you may recognize from last month's newsletter), rather than using the broadcloth or linen, and we think it turned out rather nicely:) If you're looking for a smaller project check out the My Travel Bag pattern (featured in our new pattern section), which can also be made with laminated fabric.

March 2017 Newsletter

Spring is on it's way...or it appears to be with this unusually- warm weather we've been experiencing in Ohio these last few days/weeks.Despite the fact that it's still technically winter, I think a small bit of spring fever has set in around the shop, and we're using that extra dose of Vitamin D (the extra sunshine is great, isn't it?) to keep us energized as we prepare for some of our upcoming events.

One of those events, that we're looking forward to, is the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo held March 30, 31, & April 1 at the Cleveland I-X Center. If you've been there in years past you know there's lots to see, but if it's your first time going and you're wondering what to expect, visit the sewingexpo.com for more information.

Stop in and see us. We love seeing old and new faces visit our booth. AND here's a little sneak preview of what you'll find if you do...

Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, and Mini Charms are all available.

These new 30's prints from Henry Glass will have you smiling, with their happy, spring-inspired colors and designs. Use these blues, purples, greens, and yellows to finish something old or create something new.

Poetry Prints by Moda

Once again flowers, namely roses, are the main focal point of this collection, with leaves, polka dots, and poetry lines thrown into the mix of coordinating fabric designs. Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, and Charm Packs are available.

Sweet Marion by Moda

If you feel as though we haven't shown you enough floral options already, here's another to add to your collection. A "Great Mixture of Vintage and Modern", this collection, designed by April Rosenthal, encompasses small and large floral design paired with geometric, wavy and polka-dotted designs. Find it in Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, and Charm Packs as well.

The Forever Collection by Timeless Treasures

Last, but certainly not least, is a collection designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer. While this collection still includes some floral aspects, its also quite different from any of the previous collections that we've shown you. Blacks, grays, and whites give it a "pencil-sketched" look, while red provides an eye-catching pop of color.

February 2017 Newsletter

February 2017 Newsletter

In honor of Valentine's Day coming up on the 14th, this month we're highlighting some Valentines themed fabrics and kits and providing a short history of this unique holiday.

One popular theory as to the origin of Valentine's Day states that a priest named St. Valentine was imprisoned for marrying young couples that were forbidden by the Roman Empire to be married-- the empire wanted soldiers to man the ever expanding kingdom instead of having married men tied down to their families. According to legend, St. Valentine healed his jailer's daughter and sent her a letter before being executed. He ended his letter by signing, "Your Valentine".

In actuality, there were several priests named Valentine who were Christian martyrs and whose life events had no associations with romantic love. Yet, poets and folk stories added to the St. Valentine legend, eventually culminating into the holiday we know today of romance, gift giving, and Valentines cards.

Below is featured a wall hanging "I wuff you" kit with accompanying pattern by The Wooden Bear Quilt Designs (sold separately). Also check out the 10 minute table runner in red and white with a "Love" words print. Sold as a kit.

Choose from our variety of Valentine's Day / love themed fabrics to make your own project. Need coordinating solids? Scroll through our solids fabrics for the perfect shades of white, pink, red, and lavender.

January 2017 Newsletter

01/01/2017
by Rachelle Miller

January 2017 Newsletter

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. We had lots of Christmas time fun along with too many cookies and chocolate that comes through the door this time of year.

I want to take this time to thank each and every one of our customers for helping us have a successful 2016. I am looking foward to the 2nd year of owning Miller's and seeing what it has in store for us.

To the right is a picture of my husband Henry and myself. He is the guy that stood beside me this past year when he wasn't sure if I was having a midlife crisis or a wonderful idea about buying the store.

A little about him -- Henry has been a volunteer for the past 12 years on our local fire department (we have both been EMT's for almost a decade as well). For these last couple of years, he's been doing flat roofing but will be starting a taxi service for our local Amish community in the near future.

May each one of you have a prosperous year ahead!

~ Naomi

PS. Don't forget to check our Facebook page about winter weather delays and closings at the shop!

New Patterns, Books, & Notions

Fantastic Stash Quilts Book

Whether you have scraps at home that you want to use up, or you'd prefer a more structured design using yardage, this book is perfect for you, for it offers quilts with both options. One is controlled, the other is scrappy. Sometimes only the colors change from one version to the next, other times the look is completely different.

Contains 8 quilt projects, each with an alternate version for a total of 16.

Flying Kite Quilt Pattern

Another scrappy quilt pattern by Eleanor Burns from Quilt in a Day. You can use charm packs, left over scraps, or for a planned quilt, a favorite fabric collection. The "kite" patch blocks can be bordered with or without lattic and cornerstone designs.

2 sizes: lap and crib.

Snowbirds Wall Hanging / Pillow Pattern

This pattern is for those who enjoy the challenge of more intricate hand embroidery. Whimscial snowmen and birdhouse are hand stitched, including straight stitches, stem stiches, and french knots. These designs look great as a pillow or wallhanging!

Designed by Blueberry Backroads.

Holiday Stars Pattern

From the same designer of the Fold'n Stitch patterns, comes another easy project - fabric stars, great as ornaments, decorating gifts, and just for fun! This pattern includes sewing-- for a more crafty, twisted star that requires no sewing (all you need is heat n bond and a hot glue gun), see Jody's Jems Twisted Star Ornament Pattern.

Button Boats Containers Pattern

You know it's gotta be good, and possibly addicting, if it has the Lazy Girl Designs logo. This pattern is for fabric boat containers that are made with 3 planks stitched together (while flat) and the ends tied. So simple and yet such a unique way to hold your sewing, notions, suplies, snacks, etc.

Finished size: Bottom is 6" x 3", standing about 3" tall.

Foxies Cushions Pattern

Use up your smaller scraps for these fun pillows, featuring two different fox designs that are appliqued. One pillow has a finished size of 18" square, the other, 24" x 16".

Designed by Claire Turpin Designs for Creative Abundance.

Stitchin' Time Pincushions Pattern

A craft project from "As the Crow Flies", featuring 2 decorative pincushion ideas. One is a vintage flour sifter with a pincushion tomato berry top, the other is a framed wall hanging with a pincushion and other 3 dimensional sewing notion designs.

Lullaby Blanket Babies Set Embroidery CD

Your child's favorite stuffed animal and blankie -- combined! From Embroidery Garden, come these adorable sleeping animals with your choice of giraffe, piglet, fox, sheep, monkey, elephant, owl, or zebra. The heads and arms are stuffed, securely snapped to the blanket, the length of which measures about 20 inches.

Basic sewing skills on the embroidery machine and sewing machine needed.

Darla Deer Pattern

Perhaps you'd prefer a bigger stuffed animal for toddler age and up. Darla the Deer stands almost 20" tall, making this a uniquely large scale stuffed toy that your child won't soon outgrow.

Designed by Melly & Me for Creative Abundance.

Goodnight Baby Goodnight Bear Pattern

The adorableness continues! This pattern designed by Fiona Tully for Two Brown Birds includes instructions for a stuffed bear and baby, plus their sleeping bags / blankies. One neat feature of the bear and baby are their two faces -- a playful awake face, and after flipping them over, a sleepy face.

All Ears Placemats Pattern

Your kids will enjoy these fun bunny placemats from Susie C. Shore Designs. With optional pockets in the ears for forks, spoons, and knives -- even napkins and treats, they are great table decorations for birthday parties, or for an Easter holiday theme. Easy and fast to make!

Hot Dogs Pot Grabbers Pattern

From the same designer as the All Ears placemats, Susie Shore, these "hot dogs" are doggy faced hot pads where your fingers slip into the ears.

Prefer cats over dogs? See the Allie Cats Pot Holders / Mug Mats Pattern.

Microtex Chrome Needles

These microtex professional grade chrome needles are a step above your average machine needles. For example, when sewing with regular needles for projects that include stitching through a couple layers of fusible web, build-up tends to occur due to the needle heating up and warming the fusible in your project.
These new needles dramatically reduce this kind of gummy build up!

Zero Center Tape Measure

Know where you are in your quilting, with this Dritz Longarm tape measure which features a 0 in the middle, giving you 72 inches on either side. On the back side of the tape measure, it gives you inches from 1 to 144.

Clover Roll & Press Tool

A good little gadget for hand pressing seams without pulling or distorting your fabric. Also ideal for paper piecing and laminates.

From Joan Hawley of Press Perfect and Clover.

New Fabric Collections

And Baby Takes 3 Embrace Kit

With a double layer of embrace with batting in between, this blanket is both stretchy and breathable yet heavier with more warmth than your single layer embrace blanket. Pattern, batting, and perle cotton sold separately. For tips for sewing with embrace fabric, see our September Newsletter.
