Wow. It's already June! This year is flying by. It feels as though we just entered spring, and yet summer is waiting for us just around the corner. It's is a lovely time of year, here, in our quaint little town of Charm--flowers are in full bloom, the sound of birds chirping flows through the open windows, the neighbors are busy outside gardening and mowing their lawns, and trips to the our local sweet shop for some refreshing ice cream are becoming more frequent. Within our store the sunlight is streaming through our skylights, our air conditioners are hard at work, Christmas fabric is beginning to flow in (although most of it will arrive in July), and Row by Row is just about to start (more on that in our next newsletter).
This month we're featuring something that you and your kids or grand-kids can enjoy while they're out of school for the summer. That "something" is our coloring fabrics along with our fabric markers. Miller's carries several different "coloring" prints including ballerinas, Christmas themed fabric (shown below),construction scenes, dogs, and butterflies. Select your fabric of choice and then use our fabric markers to bring the pattern to life; Let them set for 24 hours and the color won't wash out. It's a great interactive way to get kids involved in your next sewing project. We chose to make a pillowcase with the fabric that we colored here at the store, but it could be used in other projects as well. Channel your inner child, use your imagination, and create something magical.
These new clips from Taylor Seville will help you sew efficiently and accurately. Not only do they include easy to read 1/4 increments on the top of each clip, but these clips will also stay in place as your sewing foot glides right over them.

Select patterns from collections such as Lulu Lane, Poetry, and Coney Island can be now be found in laminated fabrics. Spring is on it's way...or it appears to be with this unusually- warm weather we've been experiencing in Ohio these last few days/weeks.Despite the fact that it's still technically winter, I think a small bit of spring fever has set in around the shop, and we're using that extra dose of Vitamin D (the extra sunshine is great, isn't it?) to keep us energized as we prepare for some of our upcoming events.
One of those events, that we're looking forward to, is the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo held March 30, 31, & April 1 at the Cleveland I-X Center. If you've been there in years past you know there's lots to see, but if it's your first time going and you're wondering what to expect, visit the sewingexpo.com for more information.

In honor of Valentine's Day coming up on the 14th, this month we're highlighting some Valentines themed fabrics and kits and providing a short history of this unique holiday.
One popular theory as to the origin of Valentine's Day states that a priest named St. Valentine was imprisoned for marrying young couples that were forbidden by the Roman Empire to be married-- the empire wanted soldiers to man the ever expanding kingdom instead of having married men tied down to their families. According to legend, St. Valentine healed his jailer's daughter and sent her a letter before being executed. He ended his letter by signing, "Your Valentine".
In actuality, there were several priests named Valentine who were Christian martyrs and whose life events had no associations with romantic love. Yet, poets and folk stories added to the St. Valentine legend, eventually culminating into the holiday we know today of romance, gift giving, and Valentines cards.
Designed by Barbara Cherniwchan for Coach House Designs, this camping themed quilt is 66" x 86" in flannel, featuring vintage campers that are appliqued. Use your own fabric or follow the pattern exactly by using flannels from the "Welcome Home Flannel" collection by Jennifer Bosworth for Maywood Studios.

You have the dress from Lindsey Ray Marsh, now you need that handbag to go with it! This bag can be made from leather, laminate, or heavy cotton, but the pattern focuses primarily on the leather version, providing helpful tips and tricks for working with leather.

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday with family and friends. We had lots of Christmas time fun along with too many cookies and chocolate that comes through the door this time of year.
I want to take this time to thank each and every one of our customers for helping us have a successful 2016. I am looking foward to the 2nd year of owning Miller's and seeing what it has in store for us.
To the right is a picture of my husband Henry and myself. He is the guy that stood beside me this past year when he wasn't sure if I was having a midlife crisis or a wonderful idea about buying the store.
A little about him -- Henry has been a volunteer for the past 12 years on our local fire department (we have both been EMT's for almost a decade as well). For these last couple of years, he's been doing flat roofing but will be starting a taxi service for our local Amish community in the near future.
May each one of you have a prosperous year ahead!
PS. Don't forget to check our Facebook page about winter weather delays and closings at the shop!
Whether you have scraps at home that you want to use up, or you'd prefer a more structured design using yardage, this book is perfect for you, for it offers quilts with both options. One is controlled, the other is scrappy. Sometimes only the colors change from one version to the next, other times the look is completely different.
Contains 8 quilt projects, each with an alternate version for a total of 16.
Another scrappy quilt pattern by Eleanor Burns from Quilt in a Day. You can use charm packs, left over scraps, or for a planned quilt, a favorite fabric collection. The "kite" patch blocks can be bordered with or without lattic and cornerstone designs.
This pattern is for those who enjoy the challenge of more intricate hand embroidery. Whimscial snowmen and birdhouse are hand stitched, including straight stitches, stem stiches, and french knots. These designs look great as a pillow or wallhanging!
From the same designer of the Fold'n Stitch patterns, comes another easy project - fabric stars, great as ornaments, decorating gifts, and just for fun! This pattern includes sewing-- for a more crafty, twisted star that requires no sewing (all you need is heat n bond and a hot glue gun), see Jody's Jems Twisted Star Ornament Pattern.
You know it's gotta be good, and possibly addicting, if it has the Lazy Girl Designs logo. This pattern is for fabric boat containers that are made with 3 planks stitched together (while flat) and the ends tied. So simple and yet such a unique way to hold your sewing, notions, suplies, snacks, etc.
Finished size: Bottom is 6" x 3", standing about 3" tall.

Basic sewing skills on the embroidery machine and sewing machine needed.
The adorableness continues! This pattern designed by Fiona Tully for Two Brown Birds includes instructions for a stuffed bear and baby, plus their sleeping bags / blankies. These microtex professional grade chrome needles are a step above your average machine needles.
